Oranges grow in tropical and subtropical climates that have warm to hot summers and mild winters. They grow in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 through 11. Oranges have an intermediate cold resistance and thrive in subtropical climates. Orange trees need fast-draining, moist soil and a nitrogen fertilizer to promote growth, along with warm temperatures to produce their juicy fruit. Orange trees thrive in temperatures between 13 and 38°C with winter temperatures between 2 and 10°C. Mature orange trees can withstand temperatures down to -4°C for about 10 hours during winter dormancy. Trees bearing fruit can withstand about three to five hours below or at -3°C.
