Solvents are (generally speaking) liquids into which other solids, liquids or gasses can be dissolved. Having two materials dissolved in a solvent brings them into close proximity, making them more likely to react. For instance, combining dry powders of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate will result in a reaction, but it will take hours or days to complete without high heat or pressure. Dissolving them both in water however, results in an immediate and virtually stoichiometric reaction.
