Uses

Primary

  • Cobalt oxide is an excellent catalyst for reactions such as the oxidation of ammonia. It has activity on the order of platinum but is more abundant and easier to react.

Natural Occurrence

  • Elemental cobalt does not occur naturally
  • Occurs as a -sulfide with copper substitutions in carrollite
  • Occurs as a -sulfide with arsenic in cobaltite

Hazards

Production

Extraction

The processing of cobalt is very complex, and mostly chemically rather thermally driven.
