Other

Natural occurrence

  • Does occur naturally as rare mineral spertiniite

Hazards

Character

Soluble in ammonium hydroxide

Production

Extraction

Synthesis

Combine a soluble copper (II) salt (like copper (II) chloride or copper (II) acetate) with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide

Example

  1. Completely dissolve 72g of hydrated copper (II) acetate (0.36M) in 1L of water.
  2. Completely dissolve 42g of hydrated sodium hydroxide (0.72M) in 50ml of water.
  3. Chill both solutions
  4. Combine solutions, keeping the temperature of the solution below 80°C, producing copper hydroxide and sodium acetate.
