Honey is a Naturally Occurring, Widely Available material. It is by definition a legitimate source material for this project. It is a mixture of sugars produced by bees

Composition of honey
Percent Material
38.2% Fructose
31.3% Glucose
17.2% Water
7.1% Maltose
1.3% Sucrose
balance (~5%) Other sugars, inorganics, etc.

Uses

Primary

Other

  • Food
  • Pharmacopia: Honey has been used as a topical antibiotic, packing wounds with it.

Natural Occurrence

  • Does occur naturally. Bees produce honey. Five bees produce 2ml of honey annually. One large hive can produce 25-45kg of honey per year.

Hazards

  • GRAS

Composition

Production

Extraction

  1. Burn grasses and leaves near the hive, driving off and/or stunning the bees.
  2. Remove eighty percent of the honeycomb
  3. Extinguish the fire
  4. Take the honeycomb away from the hive
  5. Crush the honeycomb, driving out the honey
  6. Strain the honey
  7. Wash the residue well. It is mostly beeswax
  8. Retain the filtrate. It is honey.

Purification

Storage

  • Store with nonzero water content and nonzero humidity to prevent crystallization

Disposal

  • Honey may be discarded into the environment. Generally speaking, bees will gather it and transport it to their hive before anything else can eat or alter it.
