Synthesis

via carbon

  1. Melt sodium nitrate
  2. Add carbon to the melt
    2 NaNO3(l) + C(s) 2 NaNO2(l) + CO2(g) // reactants burn

via sulfite

direct
  1. Combine sodium bisulfite and sodium nitrate giving sodium nitrite and sodium bisulfate
    NaNO3 + NaHSO3 NaNO2 + NaHSO4
in situ
  1. Melt sodium nitrate and sodium hydroxide.
  2. Add sulfur to the melt giving sodium nitrite and sodium sulfate
