Iodine ions, including triiodide, have strong antiseptic properties. Various preparations are used for this purpose.

Uses

  • as a topical antiseptic/antibacterial.
  • as a water purification additive

Tincture of iodine

N.B. The word tincture implies alcohol contant

  1. Gather 50ml of ethanol
  2. Gather 2g of elemental iodine
  3. Gather 2.5g of sodium iodide
  4. Combine all of the above
  5. Add distilled water until the total volume is 100ml

Lughol's iodine

  1. Gather 1 unit by mass of elemental iodine
  2. Gather 2 units by mass of potassium iodide
  3. Gather 17 units by mass of distilled water
  4. Combine all of the above
