Spirit of hartshorn

Spirit of hartshorn is a flakey white solid produced by melting and then distilling any of several naturally occurring materials which are composed of keratin; this includes horn and antler, wool, hair, fingernails, claws, hooves, feathers, and presumably leather. Hartshorn contains (among other materials) Ammonium carbonate, Ammonium bicarbonate, and Ammonium carbamate, and is a source for all three compounds.
