Producer gas (aka syngas or Synthesis gas) is a flammable mixture composed primarily of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Uses
Primary
As a fuel (fv=)
Secondary
Can be converted to methanol by self-hydrogenation using Raney nickel or urushibara nickel.
- {{#Chem: 2H2(g) + CO(g) { =Ni} CH3OH)(v)}}
Natural Occurrence
Does not occur naturally under normal conditions./
Hazards
- Asphyxiant
Production
Synthesis
It is produced by exposing hydrocarbons or solid carbon to steam at high temperatures:
- {{#Chem: C(s) + H2O9(v) = CO + H2}}
- {{#Chem: CH4(g) + H2O(v) = CO + 3H2}}
