Extraction
Synthesis
- Combine iodine with potassium hydroxide in water and heat.
- 3 I2 + 6 KOH(aq){5 KI + KIO3 + 3 H2Oheat}→
- 3 I2 + 6 KOH(aq)
- Chill the solution to precipitate the iodate
- Filter
- Residue is potassium iodate
- evaporate filtrate to dryness, leaving potassium iodide.
