Goethite is an iron ore that can contain up to 3% Nickel and 1% Cobalt. If the goethite contains additional structural water (FeO(OH)•H2O, FeO(OH)•2H2O...) it is referred to as limonite.
Uses
Primary
- Goethite is also known as "bog iron", because it is often collected from the bottom of swamps, bogs, and other low-flow wetlands.
Secondary
- Both Goethite and Limonite, as well as their roasting products, are used as yellow/orange/brown pigments
