Synthesis

  1. Combine iodine with potassium hydroxide in water and heat.
    3 I2 + 6 KOH(aq)

    5 KI + KIO3 + 3 H2O
  2. Chill the solution to precipitate the iodate
  3. Filter
  4. Residue is potassium iodate
  5. evaporate filtrate to dryness, leaving potassium iodide.
