Uses
Justification Questioned
Other
- Feedstock for potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate
Natural occurrence
Calcium nitrate occurs naturally as a result of bacterial nitrification in compost
Hazards
Production
Synthesis
- Neutralize nitric acid with a calcium salt (calcium carbonate)
- {{#Chem: 2HNO3 + CaCO3 = Ca(NO3)2 + CO2 + H2O}}
- Metathesis: silver nitrate and calcium chloride yield silver chloride and a calcium nitrate solution
- {{#Chem: 2AgNO3(aq) + CaCl2(aq) --> 2AgCl(s) + Ca(NO3)2(aq)}}
Extraction
- Leach compost with water (see also ammonia biofiltration)
