  • Feedstock for platinum-based antineoplastic medicines in WHO LEM
  • Intermediate in platinum refining

Occurs in placer gold at approximately 1400ppm (1.5g/kg) See Purification below and aqua regia

Purification

  1. Dissolve platinum in aqua regia and evaporate
Pt + 4 HNO3 + 6 HCl H2PtCl6 + 4 NO2 + 4 H2O
  1. Precipitate with ammonium chloride as ammonium hexachloroplatinate
  2. Pyrologically reduce to Platinum
