Synthesis

1. React dimethylanaline with nitrous acid (created in situ from sodium nitrite' and hydrochloric acid) giving para-dimethylaniline nitrite

   C₈H₁₁N + HNO₂ → C₈H₁₀N₂O + H₂O

2. Reduce para-dimethylaniline nitrite to Dimethyl-4-phenylenediamine

   C₈H₁₀N₂O + 2 H₂ → C₈H₁₂N₂ + H₂O
