- React dimethylanaline with nitrous acid (created in situ from sodium nitrite' and hydrochloric acid) giving para-dimethylaniline nitrite
- C8H11N + HNO2 → C8H10N2O + H2O
- Reduce para-dimethylaniline nitrite to Dimethyl-4-phenylenediamine
- C8H10N2O + 2 H2 → C8H12N2 + H2O
