Synthesis
- Bubble sulfur dioxide through a sodium hydroxide solution until no more is absorbed
- SO2(g) + NaOH(aq) → NaHSO3(aq)
- Evaporate the solution, giving sodium bisulfite.
Testing
Add any acid e.g. acetic acid and smell the sulfur dioxide produced
