Uses
Primary
- Feedstock for platinum-based antineoplastic medicines in WHO LEM
- Intermediate in platinum refining
Natural occurrence
Hazards
Production
Extraction
Occurs in placer gold at approximately 1400ppm (1.5g/kg) See Purification below and aqua regia
Synthesis
Testing
Purification
- Dissolve platinum in aqua regia and evaporate
- Pt + 4 HNO3 + 6 HCl → H2PtCl6 + 4 NO2 + 4 H2O
- Precipitate with ammonium chloride as ammonium hexachloroplatinate
- Pyrologically reduce to Platinum
