Uses
Justification Questioned
Other
- Precursor for important copper compounds such as copper (II) chloride
Natural occurrence
- rarely occurring mineral spertiniite
Hazards
Character
Soluble in ammonium hydroxide
Production
Extraction
Synthesis
Combine a soluble copper (II) salt (like copper (II) chloride or copper (II) acetate) with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide
example
- Dissolve 72g copper (II) acetate monohydrate (0.36M) in 1L of water
- Dissolve 42g of sodium hydroxide monohydrate (0.72M) in 50ml of water
- Combine solutions producing copper hydroxide and sodium acetate
- Cu(CH3COO)2(aq) + 2 NaOH(aq) → Cu(OH)2(s) + NaCH3COO(aq)
