Other

Natural occurrence

Calcium nitrate occurs naturally as a result of bacterial nitrification in compost

Hazards

Production

Synthesis

  • Neutralize nitric acid with a calcium salt (calcium carbonate)
    2 HNO3 + CaCO3 Ca(NO3)2 + CO2 + H2O
  • Metathesis: silver nitrate and calcium chloride yield silver chloride and a calcium nitrate solution
    2 AgNO3(aq) + CaCl2(aq) 2 AgCl(s) + Ca(NO3)2(aq)
