Synthesis

  1. Bubble sulfur dioxide through a sodium hydroxide solution until no more is absorbed
    SO2(g) + NaOH(aq) NaHSO3(aq)
  2. Evaporate the solution, giving sodium bisulfite.

Add any acid e.g. acetic acid and smell the sulfur dioxide produced
