Production

Extraction

Synthesis

  1. Combine potassium hydroxide and chloroplatinic acid giving potassium hexachloroplatinate (K2[PtCl6])
  2. Reduce the -hexachloroplatinate to potassium tetrachloroplatinate (K2[PtCl4])
  3. Combine with excess potassium iodide giving potassium tetraiodidoplatinate (K2[PtI4])
  4. Immerse the iodoplatinate in ammonia, giving a a potassium platinum iodine ammonia complex (K2[Pt•2I•2(NH3)])
  5. Prepare a solution of silver nitrate and add the complex, producing a poptassium platinum water ammonia complex (K2[Pt•2(H2O)•2(NH3)2])
  6. Combine with excess potassium chloride giving cisplatin(Pt•2Cl•2NH3) and potassium nitrate
